Chapter Ten

Lily woke up to Oliver crying—but when she turned around in bed she plopped almost entirely on top of Kathryn, who was blinking drowsily awake. Lily felt herself flush, suddenly all too aware of all the places their bodies were touching. Kat smiled a sleepy smile at her, face still half-buried in the pillow.

“He’s louder from here,” she murmured.

Lily laughed. “He is.” She couldn’t help but reach up to card her fingers through Kat’s messy hair, spilled on the pillow. It was soft. “I’ll go see to him, but I’ll be back soon, okay?”

“Mm’kay.”

Lily reluctantly left the warmth of the bed and went to Oliver, who was bawling like a banshee. But Lily was rested and calm and happier than she’d been for some time now, and Oliver quickly calmed down when she picked him up and rocked him. He wasn’t hungry and quickly went back to sleep in her arms.

For a moment, Lily just stood there with her son, content.

She lowered him to his crib and decided to make Kat some breakfast. When she entered her room again, she had a tray in her hands, and in it she had made pancakes, hash browns, and glasses of orange juice. She sat by Kat’s hip and freed a hand to gently shake her awake.

Kat blinked her eyes open and her face went red as a tomato when she saw the tray Lily was carrying. She looked up at Lily with a pleased, happy smile, and sat up.

“Is this for me?” She picked up a glass of juice. “Did you make these pancakes from scratch?”

Lily hummed in agreement.

“I was starting to think you had nothing but frozen stuff in the house,” Kat said, tone of voice gentle—but Lily winced anyway.

“It’s just easier,” Lily defended herself. “But I can cook. My family owns a restaurant… I was going to become a cook, before I had Oliver.”

“Oh,” Kat said softly. “Well, this looks amazing. I’m sure you’re an amazing cook, and if you need help with food stuff—“

“I can manage it,” Lily interrupted, then sent her an apologetic smile. “It’s fine, Kat. Try the pancakes, yeah? Tell me if they’re alright.”

Kat obediently picked up a fork and tried the pancakes—and then closed her eyes and moaned.

Lily felt herself flush.

“Oh my god,” Kat said. “Lily, I’m going to have breakfast here every day.”

Lily laughed.

They ate sprawled on the bed, comfortable, and spoke of nothings. Lily was finding it hard to remember the things that had been making her so sad these past few days. Kat’s borrowed shirt was riding up her stomach, exposing a tempting patch of pale skin, and Lily found herself distracted.

Kat’s voice petered out when Lily reached out and splayed her hand over her stomach. She blinked her wide blue eyes at Lily and then smiled. She reached up to her and cupped Lily’s face in a hand.

Lily obediently leaned down to kiss her. Her lips were soft, and Kat was utterly pliant under her, content and satisfied. Lily settled beside her, a leg over Kat’s, and slid her hand up under her shirt.
